Sister project to Paper Airplane Chase GX

A Wii homebrew port of Bird & Beans / Pyoro, with both games, original gameplay code, music and sound effects, and a new title screen and pause menu.

Install

You’ll need the Homebrew Channel, an SD card, and your own (USA)(EnFrEs) DSiWare ROM.

  1. Extract the release ZIP to the root of your SD card.
  2. Put your .nds ROM in sd:/apps/birdbeans/, beside boot.dol. Any filename is fine. Unzip it first if it’s in a ZIP.
  3. Launch Bird & Beans GX from the Homebrew Channel.

The app checks the ROM and prepares its data automatically on first launch. Later launches use the saved cache, so you're free to remove the ROM after first successful boot. Other regions and revisions aren’t supported.

Cute Pyoro transition voices are included for the loading1 screens. :3

In menus, select with A / 2 and go back with B. Press a button or move the stick on another controller to switch all controls to it, including during play.

GameCube controller adapter

The GameCube controller adapter for Wii U (and third-party ones that copy it) works: its four ports read as GameCube controllers. The driver is from libwiiinput and lives in source/libwiiinput/.

Display and saves

Open Pause → Graphics Options to toggle 240p at 60 Hz and choose between Fixed and Fill scaling.

Fixed keeps the original proportions by simply taking the original game's pixels and doubling their size. Fill detects the Wii’s 4:3 or 16:9 setting and stretches the image to fill the whole screen. Scaling applies to gameplay; menus always stay at the Fixed size, and the title and loading screens always use the full screen.

Widescreen systems also show Aspect Ratio for the option to use a centered 4:3 view while in Fill mode.

All graphics options are saved when you leave the menu and restored on the next launch.

High scores and graphics options are saved in apps/birdbeans/scores.dat. Scores are saved on game over, restart, return to title or a clean exit. Keep that file when updating. Powering off during a run can lose an unsaved record.

Credits

  • Bird & Beans / Pyoro by Nintendo, the games this port runs, read from your own DSiWare ROM
  • The Pyoro voice recordings by Nintendo / Intelligent Systems, from WarioWare: Get It Together!, submitted by Mysticus to The Sounds Resource, with the 101soundboards Pyoro voice board as a reference

  • ndspy by RoadrunnerWMC, the reference for the ROM's LZ10 and backward ARM9 decompression; ndspy credits DSDecmp and NSMBe/Elitemap for those
  • libwiiinput by quatric, from its repository, for the GameCube controller adapter for Wii U, with the adapter driver from RiftWii by the RiftWii contributors; RiftWii credits Alex Chadwick's wup-028-bslug and FIX94's Nintendont and its contributors for it
  • libogc by Michael Wiedenbauer (shagkur) and Dave Murphy (WinterMute), with libfat by Michael "Chishm" Chisholm for the SD card, ASND by Hermes for sound, and wiiuse for the Wii Remote, from devkitPro's libraries
  • devkitPPC by devkitPro, with newlib and the GCC runtime library

License

The port code and documentation are free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. Some parts use other licenses: SSEQPlayer is WTFPL version 2, the decompression code adapted from ndspy is GPL version 3 or later, and the other third-party components retain their own licenses. Nintendo game data and the included Pyoro recordings are excluded. All the texts are in licenses/, and the license notices say which applies where.

Footnotes

  1. The loading screens aren't real loading screens, they're just cute little transitions. It felt odd to have the game start instantly. ↩
