Welcome to the Ape Escape (USA) Recomp

This repository packages the North American Ape Escape game (SCUS-94423) as a native application through static recompilation. The goal is a convenient desktop experience with a dedicated launcher, flexible controller and video settings, saves, and an optional mod collection.

The project is still a work in progress, but a 100% playthrough can be verified!

The original game is not included. You need your own legally obtained disc image (CHD/CUE/BIN). No retail PlayStation BIOS is bundled; OpenBIOS is supplied as the default alternative.

Choose your platform

Nightly packages are produced by GitHub Actions when the build succeeds. Visit Releases for the assets currently available.

PlatformPackage to look forNotes
Windows, 64-bitZIPExtract the package, then open the launcher executable.
macOS, Apple SiliconZIP or DMGFor M-series Macs.
macOS, IntelZIP or DMGFor Intel-based Macs.
Linux, x86_64AppImagePortable Linux package for x86_64 desktop systems.

First boot

  1. Start the application and choose your own Ape Escape disc image in the launcher. A CUE sheet with its matching BIN track is recommended. CHD is also accepted.
  2. Select a retail SCPH-1001 BIOS only if you have one and wish to use it; otherwise leave the bundled OpenBIOS selection in place.
  3. Configure your controller and display to taste. The settings pages are still available even when you leave every optional mod disabled.
  4. Open Mods only when you want to experiment with enhancements, enable the specific features you want, and then start the game.

On macOS, the app is ad-hoc signed rather than notarized, so Gatekeeper may ask you to approve opening it. The game image and any retail BIOS must remain in your own storage.

A DualShock-compatible controller is the natural fit: move Spike with the left stick and aim the net with the right stick. Keyboard and controller bindings can be changed in the launcher. The default keyboard layout is:

InputKey
D-padT up, G down, F left, H right
Left stickW up, S down, A left, D right
Right stickArrow keys
Cross / Circle / Square / TriangleX / C / Z / V
L1 / L2 / R1 / R2Q / E / Space / R
L3 / R3Y / U
Start / SelectReturn / Shift

Fresh installs and Reset to Defaults use this layout. An earlier unmodified default layout is upgraded once; custom keyboard binds are left alone.

Make it your own

The launcher keeps the usual configuration controls alongside this project's optional features. Video, audio, system, hotkey, controller, save and mod pages remain available; the custom branding does not hide the original launcher options.

New launcher tools

  • Save Protection Center — browse timestamped snapshots, restore a selected backup, export a copy to another folder, and set retention from 5–50 backups. Restores ask for confirmation, create a safety snapshot first, and merge matching files without deleting newer files.
  • Daily Challenge — reproducible date-based challenge codes with two rules selected from the existing timed-hunt, no-damage, and limited-lives challenges. Challenge Pack mods must be enabled manually; completion history is local and self-reported, not automatically verified.
  • Stage Knowledge Cards — stage roster counts and source links from the existing North-American Monkepedia catalogue, plus general gameplay tips. These are not live tracking or route-verified walkthroughs.
  • Mod Manager tools — search mods, filter by enabled/disabled/experimental/needs-attention status, and apply confirmed Original Experience, Visual Enhancements, or Challenge Run presets. Enable All and Disable All require confirmation.
  • Setup Doctor — check the selected disc, BIOS path, application-data write access, and save-backup status; copy a diagnostic report and jump to repair actions.
  • Controller Test Lab — inspect connected gamepad buttons, sticks, and triggers, with an optional rumble test.
  • Ape Escape OST Player — open Settings → Audio → Open OST Player to search the Archive.org soundtrack listing, download only the selected track, and play/pause, skip, seek, or set saved volume. Tracks are cached in the per-user data folder and are not bundled into releases.
  • Update & Release Center — display installed build metadata, launch the Nightly updater, open release downloads, and access the changelog.
  • Mod Developer Toolkit — a launcher page with a copyable read-only native plugin template and a link to the developer guide. CI checks the example plugin and launcher integration.

Optional mods

Every mod feature starts off. Enabling one item does not turn on the others. The bundled catalog currently includes:

  • Widescreen — select 16:9, 21:9 or adaptive presentation.
  • Interpolated Rendering — optional intermediate-frame presentation rates. It requires OpenGL; it does not intentionally change the game's simulation cadence.
  • PGXP Precision — optional geometry precision and texture handling.
  • Skip FMVs — skip full-motion videos through the game's normal completion path.
  • Quick Gadget Select — a compact gadget-selection row.
  • Sky Flyer Triple Jump — optional third quick Cross/X press to trigger the Sky Flyer, using the game's existing gadget logic; hold Jump to keep rotating. Manual right-stick movement takes priority.
  • Gameplay Assist Pack — separate Infinite Lives, Infinite Health, Infinite Air and Unlock All Gadgets switches.
  • Extended Draw Distance — an experimental rendering tweak aimed at reducing certain distance pop-in paths.
  • Quality-of-Life Tools — Quick Retry, camera sensitivity, collectible counters, a monkey-progress panel and a level timer.
  • Challenge Pack — optional timed monkey hunts (3/5/10 minutes), no-damage runs, limited starting lives (1/3/5), and randomized challenges.
  • Hardcore Challenges — separate default-off toggles for Monkey Mayhem, an experimental rule intended to make monkeys act/alert more often, and Nightmare Mode, which automatically includes Monkey Mayhem alongside one-hit health, a three-life maximum (including extra lives), and a three-minute limit per stage. The monkey behavior mapping needs in-game validation.

Treat the newer Quality-of-Life tools and Extended Draw Distance as experimental until you have tried them in the actual game. Quick Retry is a fast-respawn shortcut, not a full stage reload; the monkey-progress panel tracks caught/uncaught entries rather than showing live monkey positions. If an enhancement causes glitches or looks unlike the original, turn it back off.

The base game also retains its original rendering limits and culling behaviour. Widescreen or increased draw distance can expose pop-in that is not present in the standard view. For current limitations and reverse-engineering notes, see ISSUES.md and the audio/video QA plan added to docs/AUDIOVISUAL_QA.md.

Display, input and saves

The launcher offers resolution and window-size controls, fullscreen, rendering selection, supersampling, antialiasing, texture filtering, FMV filtering, audio options, hotkeys and input remapping. The precise controls shown can depend on the current runtime build.

Memory-card saves, save states and rewind are part of the project experience. Keep backups of important save data while using experimental builds or mods. Settings and saves are kept outside the macOS app bundle; avoid deleting the user data folder when replacing an app.

Accessibility and launcher tools

Open Settings → Accessibility to adjust launcher text size (80–150%), enable high-contrast colors, use larger controls and focus targets, or reduce background visual effects. These launcher-wide preferences save automatically in the operating system's per-user application-data folder, so replacing the macOS app bundle does not reset them. They do not enable or change gameplay mods.

The dashboard's Quick Tools can open the app-data folder, save folder, or selected disc folder; show the installed channel, version, and commit; copy build information for a bug report; and open the Nightly release page for update history. Roll Back Last Build restores the package saved by an in-app update. The dedicated Monkepedia launcher tab contains source-linked North-American monkey profiles and a manual caught checklist. Each listed profile shows its US-game name, Monkey Level, a concise description summary and a link to its source page. Entries without fully verified details are omitted rather than guessed; see Monkepedia attribution and coverage. Caught-monkey checklist progress is user-controlled in the launcher; no gameplay capture tracking is performed. The Windows/macOS updater preserves player configuration, the selected disc and BIOS paths, keyboard/controller mappings, memory cards, and custom mod content when replacing the app. Linux AppImage updates are currently manual.

Updates without hunting for downloads

Use Check for Nightly Updates in supported Windows/macOS builds to check this repository's Nightly release. Linux users can download the AppImage directly from Releases. The helper ships a verified HTTPS CA bundle for its standalone Python runtime, chooses the matching platform package, checks its SHA-256 checksum, and waits for the game application to close before installation. HTTPS certificate and hostname verification remain enabled. The Windows updater preserves saves and player configuration—including the selected disc, BIOS path, keyboard/controller settings, launcher preferences and mod enabled-state—while replacing shipped runtime files. macOS user data remains separate from the app bundle.

Older builds made before the updater was added cannot run an in-app update. Install one recent package from Releases first. If a suitable asset or a valid checksum is unavailable, use the release page instead of forcing an install.

How the project is built

The Windows x64, Apple Silicon and Intel Mac packages, plus a Linux x86_64 AppImage, are built in GitHub Actions. Successful pushes run the packaging and validation jobs; release assets include platform packages, SHA-256 sidecars and updater metadata.

The original-disc image used by CI is stored outside the public repository. The workflow retrieves it from configured private Dropbox credentials or the optional `APE_ESCAPE_DISC_URL` secret, then converts and verifies it in temporary build storage. The disc image, retail BIOS, and generated game translation are not committed as public source assets.
