The Maze Wii

A native Wii homebrew port of Jeremy Winterrowd's The Maze (the original Scary Maze Game).

Wii Homebrew devkitPPC GRRLIB License: MIT (code)

</div>

The Maze Wii recreates the original Flash game as native Wii homebrew while keeping the original 550×400 stage, maze geometry, visuals, timing, cursor behavior, scream sequence, and ending presentation as closely as possible.

Features

  • Native PowerPC Wii homebrew; no Flash runtime or emulator required.
  • Wii Remote IR pointer mapped directly to the original 550×400 Flash coordinate space.
  • Original maze layouts and collision regions recovered from the supplied SWF.
  • Original menu, level artwork, typography, scare image, audio, and ending presentation.
  • Original tiny dark-blue cursor presentation.
  • Segment-based pointer collision checks to prevent IR jumps from skipping thin walls.
  • Homebrew Channel metadata and 128×48 icon included.
  • Reproducible GitHub Actions build using the official devkitPro PowerPC container.

Requirements

  • devkitPro / devkitPPC with the wii-dev package group
  • libogc
  • GRRLIB
  • GRRLIB dependencies: libfat-ogc, ppc-libpng, ppc-freetype, ppc-libjpeg-turbo

See Building for first-time toolchain setup.

Building

From a devkitPro MSYS2 shell:

git clone https://github.com/ponkis/the-maze-wii.git
cd the-maze-wii
make clean
make

The build produces:

the-maze-wii.dol

To create a ready-to-copy Homebrew Channel directory:

make package

which generates:

dist/
└── the-maze-wii/
    ├── boot.dol
    ├── icon.png
    └── meta.xml

Copy dist/the-maze-wii to SD:/apps/the-maze-wii.

The final scare/credits screen also preserves the original Flash cursor and button hover/pressed artwork.

Controls

InputAction
Wii Remote IRMove the original blue cursor
ASelect PLAY / interact with menu buttons
HOMEExit the application

Maze progression itself is pointer-driven, matching the original Flash game.

Fidelity

The port intentionally keeps the original game's 550×400 logical stage instead of redesigning it for widescreen. On Wii output it is centered inside a 640×480 framebuffer, preserving the source coordinates and proportions.

The maze hit regions, level progression, scare trigger, repeated scream timing, intro button states, moving winterrowd.com ending transition, and final screen are based on the supplied original SWF rather than being recreated from memory.

See Technical notes for implementation details.

Homebrew Channel

Release metadata:

  • Name: The Maze Wii
  • Version: 1.0.0
  • Author / port: ponkis
  • Original game: Jeremy Winterrowd
  • Release date: 2026-09-17

The application directory must contain boot.dol; Homebrew Channel does not launch a DOL with an arbitrary filename.
